The German Montessori Association, Deutsche Montessori-Vereinigung e.V. (DMV) was founded in 1961. It is a free initiative to promote and spread Maria Montessori's pedagogy. Educators and scientists have joined forces in the association to support Montessori pedagogy and to develop it scientifically and practically. The German Montessori Association is the training organization with the largest number of members in Germany, counts numerous committed Montessori educators and institutions among its members, actively conducts research and maintains international contacts. The DMV is a member of the "Montessori Federal Association of Germany" and has been affiliated with the "Association Montessori Internationale - AMI" based in Amsterdam since its founding. Mario Montessori, Maria Montessori's son, General Director of the AMI, contractually authorized the then Montessori Association to organize Montessori courses in 1962.
